The University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra is a public university-type university located in Nitra.
The predecessor of the university was the Pedagogical Institute established in Nitra in 1959. In 1964, the institute was renamed the Faculty of Pedagogy by law. In 1992, the University of Nitra was established by merging the Faculty of Pedagogy and the University of Agriculture in Nitra, which was, however, divided into the University of Agriculture and the University of Pedagogy in the same year. The university has had its current name since 1996, when the University of Pedagogy in Nitra was renamed the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra by Act No. 324/1996 Coll. The UKF is the sixth largest university in Slovakia by the number of students.
Higher education at the University of Constantine the Philosopher is carried out in full-time and part-time form in accredited study programs and is structured in accordance with the Bologna Declaration into three levels – bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral. The university provides higher education in a wide range of accredited study programs, which are guaranteed by the faculties and their departments. Higher education is organized and registered with the support of the credit system of study. Full-time higher education is free of charge for citizens of the Slovak Republic and the EU during the standard length of study. Studies are also free of charge for citizens of third countries if they study full-time in the state language, i.e. Slovak. Part-time studies are in principle subject to a fee. The university also determines tuition fees for full-time studies, but only if the student studies several study programs simultaneously, as well as for an above-standard length of study. Among other things, UKF offers education for seniors in the so-called University of the Third Age. The educational programs on offer include religion, English language, information technology, and psychology.
